Located in the aspen/parkland transitional zone between the coniferous forest, tall grass prairie, and prairie pothole region, the 61,000 acre refuge supports 280 bird species, wolves, moose, and bobcat. Nationally recognized for its birding opportunities, the terrain is flat with many wetlands. There are 3 walking trails and a seasonal auto-tour route. Deer hunting is permitted.
